Francis Pope of Good Promise
From the moment Pope Francis stepped on to the balcony of St Peter's, people around the globe sensed that not only the Catholic Church, but the world at large, could be entering a new spiritual, political and social age. The pomp and circumstance that had characterised the Vatican for as long as most people could remember evaporated as Francis asked the throng gathered in the square to "pray over" him before he gave his first blessing. Not since John XXIII, had a new Pope opened the windows of the Church so widely to let in some much needed fresh air.
This biography of Pope Francis charts Jorge Mario Bergoglio's formation as a priest and bishop against the dramatic backdrop of Argentina's turbulent politics and the challenging principles he adopted as a member of the Jesuit order. It examines critically the extent to which his social conscience was influenced by the legacy of the country's controversial president General Peron and his wife Evita, and questions his moral standing during the Argentina military junta's 'Dirty War' when he was accused of not having done enough on behalf of the victims, including fellow Jesuit priests. Few Vatican elections have generated as much interest as that of Cardinal Jose Bergoglio. Francis, Pope of Good Promise, the first detailed biography to include an analysis of Pope Francis's first year at the Vatican, will appear just as he makes his first visit to the US.

History of the Sisters of Providence Vol 1
1806-1856
Excerpt from the Preface: "The work of the Sisters of Providence in the Indiana woodland forms part of several diverse movements in the world of their day, first in Europe in the great resurgence of Catholic thought and activity in post-Revolutionary France and also in the far-flung missionary labors of France across the globe. In America the Sisters fitted as an integral part into the great western pioneer movement of settlement, development, and education; and their labors tied up intimately in particular with the diocese of Vincennes, which was only six years old when they reached Indiana. They bore their part also in the great work of assimilating and educating the new immigrant population, so largely Catholic, and exerted a powerful influence in commending the much-maligned Catholic religion to their Protestant pupils and their parents. When the little group of frightened Frenchwomen crossed the Wabash on that memorable afternoon in late October, 1840, to undertake their works of zeal and education in the thick Vigo County woods, they brought to Indiana a permanent and beneficent force destined to grow and wax more and more potent for good in many diverse fields."

History of the Sisters of Providence Vol 2
1856 - 1894
"This second volume of the history of the Sisters of Providence of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods covers the administrations of Mother Theodore's first four successors: Mother Mary Cecilia Bailly, Mother Anastasie Brown, Mother Mary Ephrem Glenn, and Mother Euphrasie Hinkle--a period of over forty years. The author, with candor and honesty, with true literary skill and clarity of expression, presents each administration with its joys and sorrows, its successes and sometimes insurmountable problems, all convincing the reader that Mother Theodore's successors had no clearcut path created for them either."

History of the Sisters of Providence Vol 3: The Path Marked Out
1890 - 1928
The pages of this volume span a period of approximately 40 years in the history of the Congregation of the Sisters of Providence of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, Indiana--from 1890 when Mother Mary Cleophas Foley was elected General Superior for the first of her 6 terms of office, to 1928, the year of her death. Prior to this time, however, 50 years of struggle, privation, and dedicated apostolic labor, in the fields of Christian education and basic health care, had prepared the ground for this later harvest of expansion and development.

Dr. Seuss's The Lorax
"What was the Lorax?
And why was it there?
And why was it lifted and taken somewhere
from the far end of town where the Grickle-grass grows?
It was sort of a man.
Describe him?... That's hard. I don't know if I can.
He was shortish. And oldish.
And brownish. And mossy.
And he spoke with a voice
that was sharpish and bossy."

Our Faith Teaches: Welcoming the Refugee and Migrant
This colorful, eight-panel brochure on migration will foster community discussion and reflection.
The “Welcoming the Refugee and Migrant” brochure presents Church teaching on hospitality to the stranger. Use it to:
Reflect on historical and biblical migration experiences,

Look for “next steps” that you and fellow parishioners can take, and
Say a prayer to Jesus—himself a migrant and refugee—that we would be his love in the world.
As refugees and migrants flee their homelands toward new places that offer the hope of safety and security, this community dialogue is needed more than ever!
