The specific purpose of the SISTERS of PROVIDENCE in founding their mission in China was to establish schools for young women at Kaifeng in Honan Province. They did so in response to the invitation of Bishop Joseph Tacconi, vicar apostolic of Kaifeng. The bishop's aim in launching secondary education was to build up the local church through educating women to evangelize the non-Christian population. The sisters' work was started, not in a coastal metropolis with access to western comforts, but at a city two hundred miles inland where living conditions were harsh, and during the 1920's, local strife made life dangerous. Their determined efforts to succeed in their work against a background of hardship and illness as well as upheavals in China successively of civil war, World War II, the Communist revolution, the flight from Kaifeng, and restarting their work in Taiwan gives meaning to the title, AGAINST ALL ODDS.
