In Japan, the cherry blossoms have come to symbolize clouds because of their tendency of blooming all at once. They also are a metaphor for the nature of life as it relates to Japanese cultural tradition which is sometimes associated with a influence from Buddhism. This refers to the concept of "mono no aware" which translates as literally "the pathos of things" or "an empathy toward things".
