The Journals and Letters of Mother Theodore Guerin, Foundress of the Sisters of Providence at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, Indiana, takes us back more than one hundred years to an era of our history that is rapidly being forgotten in the excitement and the eventful happenings of the present day.  Through its graphic portrayal, the life of Religious in pioneer days (not only of Indiana but also of the Middle West) comes to life with clarity and vigor.

The narrative of the first voyage is told with keen observations and penetrating comment; the tale of the shipwreck in the second voyage proceeds with dramatic swiftness and intensity; the journey overland from New York through Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Frederick to Wheeling from which point the boat trip down the Ohio begins, has realistic touches which give it form and life; the privations the Sisters endured in founding a Congregation and a College in the wilderness; the courage of the Sisters under almost incredible misunderstanings; --all are told without any pleading for sympathy, but with a directness and a simplicity that are the best guarantee of truth.  The Journals and Letters will prove interesting reading from beginning to end. The book will, without doubt, be an historical document of great value to those studying American pioneer life and institutions.

On October 15, 2006, the Roman Catholic Church canonized Mother Theodore Guérin, making her only the eighth saint who lived and worked in the United States. In celebration of this momentous event, ACTA Publications will publish The Eighth American Saint--a comprehensive and readable biography on this inspirational woman that will include a vivid, eye-witness account of the canonization ceremony.

Saint Mother Theodore Guérin left a legacy of service, piety and faith across two continents. In France she inspired hope while serving as superior to the schools in the town of Soulaines. But it was in the fledgling United States that her abilities shone, as she founded a new congregation of the Sisters of Providence and built schools, orphanages, and even a pharmacy. Her memory lives on through Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College in Indiana--the United States' oldest Catholic liberal arts college for women.

Born in France in 1798, Anne-Th?r?se Guerin served with the Sisters of Providence for seventeen years before being asked to lead a small missionary band of Sisters of Providence to the United States in 1840. She established a motherhouse in Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, Indiana. She overcame great trials, including prejudice against Catholics and a devastating fire, while building a strong congregation. By the time of her death in 1856 she had opened schools in towns throughout Indiana. The Eighth American Saint is a reissue of the book Faith Is the Substance, but it includes a new Foreword and Afterword by Mary K. Doyle that include a discussion and description of the canonization ceremony taking place on October 15, 2006.

History of the Sisters of Providence Vol 1

History of the Sisters of Providence Vol 1
$10.00

1806-1856
Excerpt from the Preface: "The work of the Sisters of Providence in the Indiana woodland forms part of several diverse movements in the world of their day, first in Europe in the great resurgence of Catholic thought and activity in post-Revolutionary France and also in the far-flung missionary labors of France across the globe. In America the Sisters fitted as an integral part into the great western pioneer movement of settlement, development, and education; and their labors tied up intimately in particular with the diocese of Vincennes, which was only six years old when they reached Indiana. They bore their part also in the great work of assimilating and educating the new immigrant population, so largely Catholic, and exerted a powerful influence in commending the much-maligned Catholic religion to their Protestant pupils and their parents. When the little group of frightened Frenchwomen crossed the Wabash on that memorable afternoon in late October, 1840, to undertake their works of zeal and education in the thick Vigo County woods, they brought to Indiana a permanent and beneficent force destined to grow and wax more and more potent for good in many diverse fields."

1856 - 1894
"This second volume of the history of the Sisters of Providence of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods covers the administrations of Mother Theodore's first four successors:  Mother Mary Cecilia Bailly, Mother Anastasie Brown, Mother Mary Ephrem Glenn, and Mother Euphrasie Hinkle--a period of over forty years.  The author, with candor and honesty, with true literary skill and clarity of expression, presents each administration with its joys and sorrows, its successes and sometimes insurmountable problems, all convincing the reader that Mother Theodore's successors had no clearcut path created for them either."

1890 - 1928
The pages of this volume span a period of approximately 40 years in the history of the Congregation of the Sisters of Providence of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, Indiana--from 1890 when Mother Mary Cleophas Foley was elected General Superior for the first of her 6 terms of office, to 1928, the year of her death.  Prior to this time, however, 50 years of struggle, privation, and dedicated apostolic labor, in the fields of Christian education and basic health care, had prepared the ground for this later harvest of expansion and development.

1926 - 1966

Fourth in the series chronicling the history of the Congregation of the Sisters of Providence of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, Indiana, the volume covers the period of expansion between 1926 and 1966, a period when hundreds of thousands of children were the beneficiaries of the Catholic school system in the United States. Many will be able to identify with the educational setting described in these pages. At times the students and graduates may have wondered what life was like for the women in the front of the classroom. The photos, memoirs, diaries and correspondence that were drawn from to assemble this narrative will enable the reader to understand and appreciate religious life from the perspective of those who lived it during these years. The wider picture of how congregations of women religious function within the Catholic Church emerges through descriptions of dealings with officials in Rome and with bishops in the United States, as well as with the network of various Catholic organizations such as the National Catholic Education Association. In addition to the sisters themselves, the reader will meet the men and women whose generous contributions of time, money and contacts were essential to the success of the educational mission. Side by side with the administrative and organizational work of the superiors that provides the backbone of the narrative are stories of daily life.

The Third Miracle: An Ordinary Man, A Medical Mystery, and a Trail of Faith

product image
$14.99
Part detective story and part courtroom drama--with a touch of the supernatural--The Third Miracle exposes, for the first time ever, the secret rituals and investigations the Catholic Church today undertakes in order to determine sainthood.
On a raw January 2001 morning at a Catholic convent deep in the Indiana woods, a Baptist handyman named Phil McCord made an urgent plea to God. He was by no means a religious man but he was a desperate man. McCord's right eye was a furious shade of red and had pulsed for months in the wake of cataract surgery. He had one shot at recovery: a risky procedure that would replace part of his diseased eye with healthy tissue from a corpse. Dreading the grisly operation, McCord stopped into the convent's chapel and offered a prayer--a spontaneous and fumbling request of God: Can you help me get through this? He merely hoped for inner peace, but when McCord awoke the next day, his eye was better--suddenly and shockingly better. Without surgery. Without medicine. And no doctor could explain it. Many would argue that Mother Théodore Guérin, the long-deceased matriarchal founder of the convent, had "interceded" on McCord's behalf. Was the healing of Phil McCord's eye a miracle?
That was a question that the Catholic Church and the pope himself would ultimately decide. As part of an ancient and little-known process, top Catholic officials would convene a confidential tribunal to examine the handyman's healing, to verify whether his recovery defied the laws of nature. They would formally summon McCord, his doctors, coworkers, and family to a windowless basement room at the Archdiocese of Indianapolis. They would appoint two local priests to serve the roles of judge and prosecutor. And they would put this alleged miracle on trial, all in an effort to determine if Mother Théodore, whose cause for beatification and canonization dated back to 1909, should be named the eighth American saint.
In The Third Miracle, journalist Bill Briggs meticulously chronicles the Church investigation into this mysterious healing and offers a unique window into the ritualistic world of the secretive Catholic saint-making process--one of the very foundations on which the Church is built. With exclusive access to the case and its players, Briggs gives readers a front-row seat inside the closed-door drama as doctors are grilled about the supernatural, priests doggedly hunt for soft spots in the claim, and McCord comes to terms with the metaphorical "third miracle" his own reconciliation with the metaphysical. As the inquiry shifts from the American heartland to an awaiting jury at Vatican City in Rome, Briggs astutely probes our hunger for everyday miracles in an age of technology, the Catholic Church's surprisingly active saint-making operation, and the eternal clash of faith and science.
